Prof. Takehiko SATOH, President of AOGS, Announces Election Results
The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS), held in Singapore from July 27 to August 1, 2025, attracted nearly 4,000 experts and young scholars in geosciences from around the globe.
Authorized by Ministry of Water Resources, China, Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI) took the lead in organizing and coordinating experts from NHRI, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, and the Yellow River Conservancy Commission to participate in academic exchanges on multiple topics including climate change, eco-hydrology and water resources management at the annual meeting. Xiaojun WANG, Senior Engineer (professor level) at NHRI, stood as a candidate for the position of President of AOGS Hydrological Sciences (HS) Section. After going the General Assembly election session, HS Section plenary meeting, and voting procedures, Dr. WANG was democratically elected as the new President of AOGS HS Section. This marks the first time a scientist from mainland China has chaired this section, signifying NHRI’s elevated academic standing and global influence in the field of hydrology.
AOGS, established in 2003, is an important academic organization and a platform for exchanges and cooperation in the field of earth sciences in Asia-Oceania Region, with the aim of promoting the development of earth sciences. AOGS has 8 chapters, covering Atmospheric Sciences, Biogeosciences, Hydrological Sciences, Interdisciplinary Geosciences, Ocean Sciences, Planetary Sciences, Solar & Terrestrial Sciences, and Solid Earth Sciences. This annual meeting organized more than 300 academic sessions, covering many cutting-edge and hot topics such as extreme weather events, adaptive water resources management, sea level rise, artificial intelligence application and earth system modeling.
Dr. Xiaojun WANG has been engaged in water resources planning and management research for a long time, and concurrently serves as Secretary-General of the Chinese National Commission for International Association of Hydrological Sciences (CNC-IAHS), Chair of Commission on Young Hydrologists, CNC-IAHS, and Vice President of the Chinese National Committee of Young Earth Scientists Association. Since serving as the secretary of AOGS HS Section in 2021, he has participated in organizing academic activities such as International Symposium on Water-Ecology-Energy-Food Nexus, International Symposium on Opportunities and Challenges in Hydrology in Asia-Oceania Region under Climate Change, International Symposium on Extreme Events and Water Security under Global Change, and Special Session Emerging Technologies and Management for Water-Energy-Food Synergy Security at the 3rd Asian International Water Week. He has also organized sessions Water Resources Management in Asia under Changing Environments multiple times during AOGS annual meetings, playing an active role in promoting international exchanges and cooperation in China’s water conservancy science and technology.
