Visiting Physical Model of Pussur Waterway Regulation Project for Mongla Port, Bangladesh

On August 23, 2025, H. E. M. Sakhawat Hussain, Advisor to Ministry of Shipping and concurrently Advisor to Ministry of Labour and Employment (minister-level), led a four-member delegation, visiting Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI). The delegation toured around NHRI exhibition hall. President DAI Jiqun extended his warmest welcome, provided an overview of NHRI's development history, disciplinary advancements, talent pool, research platforms and international collaborations, and held an on-site discussion.
Vice President PAN Junning accompanied the delegation to NHRI’s Dangtu Experiment Base, where they observed the physical model testing of the Pussur Waterway Regulation Project for the Mongla Port in Bangladesh and held a discussion. Principals and technical experts from NHRI International Cooperation Office and River and Harbor Engineering Department presented the updates on NHRI’s international cooperation activities, including consultancy projects in Bangladesh, and the model testing progress of the Pussur Waterway Regulation Project. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on technical challenges, including the causes of severe back siltation in the Pussur Waterway and potential mitigation measures.
H. E. Sakhawat highly commended NHRI's scientific expertise and practical experiences in port and waterway engineering. He emphasized that the Mongla Port, as Bangladesh's second-largest port, played a vital role in regional economic development. He expressed his hope that NHRI would continue to provide technical support to facilitate the successful approval and construction of the Pussur Waterway Project, drawing on China's experiences in waterway management. On behalf of the Bangladesh Ministry of Shipping, H. E. Sakhawat also congratulated NHRI on its 90th anniversary, affirming the commitment of both parties to jointly build a model of Belt and Road cooperation.
Principals and technical experts from China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) Bangladesh Ltd. and NHRI accompanied the delegation during the visit and participated in the discussions.
