NHRI is undertaking a research project "Impacts of Port Construction on Marine Ecosystem and Rehabilitation Technology" under the National Key Research and Development Program of China. The project leader, Prof. WEN Yuncheng, recently led his team members to conduct a field investigation of technical application at the Skikda Port, Algeria.
The Skikda Port, located on the southern coast of the Mediterranean, is one of the important ports on the "Belt and Road" shipping route between China and African countries, and also serves as a significant overseas demonstration site for the technical application of the research project. Upon arrival in Algeria, the research team went to the Skikda Port Engineering Project Department of China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. (Algerie), and had technical exchanges with the Department, gaining insights into the progress of the port construction and presenting site requirements for the research project. Subsequently, the team conducted field investigation on the port construction and prefabrication sites, closely linking the key technology of comprehensive utilization of dredged soil specified in the research tasks with the port construction and making arrangements for the upcoming technical application.
The cooperation partner, China Harbour Engineering Company LTD. (ALGERIE), attached great importance to this field investigation, and jointly organized a technical exchange workshop of "Green Port, Smart Port" with one of the top universities in Algeria, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene by taking the opportunity of the visit of NHRI experts. The rector of the University delivered a speech at the workshop. Approximately 100 participants, including officials from the Algerian Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Environment, Algerian Institute of Marine Research, and several leaders from Chinese central government-owned enterprises based in Algeria took part in this exchange event.
After China Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd. (Algerie) reported the field investigation to the Chinese Embassy in Algeria, Ambassador LI Jian met with the research team and listened to the report on the application of the research findings and academic exchanges between China and Algeria. Ambassador LI highly praised the project team for exporting Chinese port construction technology to Algeria and promoting academic exchanges between the two nations. He expressed his hope that China-Algeria scientific and technological exchange and cooperation would be further expanded and the promotion and application of technological achievements along the "Belt and Road" countries strengthened in the future.
During the field investigation in Algeria, in-depth exchanges were conducted with the Skikda Port Engineering Project Department as well as Algerian universities and research institutes, which will play a significant role in promoting the improvement of the research tasks and the application of technological achievements of the research project.
