Autumn is a beautiful season in Nanjing. This year saw a group of newly-enrolled promising graduate students at NHRI. At the opening ceremony for the class of 2020 on September 13th, LI Yun, Vice President of NHRI and Dean of its Graduate School, made a speech, WANG Yintang, Deputy Chief Engineer, gave instructions on behalf of all supervisors, and student representatives also shared their experience of enrollment at NHRI. Leaders in charge of postgraduate education from respective research departments attended the ceremony. CHEN Tianrong, director of Human Resources, Labor and Education Department and Executive Dean of the Graduate School, hosted the ceremony.

The ceremony began with the solemn national anthem. Vice President LI Yun introduced NHRI’s development, faculties, research platforms, logistical support, and other information regarding graduate education. He conveyed the guiding spirits and principles of Secretary-General XI Jinping’s important instructions on graduate education and the National Graduate Education Conference. He encouraged the students to be ambitious, competent and responsible in the new era. First, students should be firm in faith, and devote themselves to the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics. It is necessary for them to establish positive outlooks on world, life and values, and closely link personal fulfillment with the development of the Party and the nation. Second, students should be realistic and pragmatic, stick to codes of academic conduct, and reject any academic wrongdoings. Third, students should be pioneering and innovative to promote the development of water science and technology in China. To be a pioneer, it is important to cultivate consciousness, enthusiasm and desire for innovation. Fourth, students should be obedient to rules and regulations, and keep them in mind to be excellent practitioners of conduct codes.

WANG Yintang also offered some advice. First, students should adhere to their dreams and work hard to achieve the dreams. Second, students should cultivate good moral character and uphold integrity. Third, students should face up to challenges, maintain positive attitudes toward life, and pay attention to mental and physical health.

In conclusion, CHEN Tianrong hoped that the class of 2020 should serve innovation in science and technology, and national rejuvenation. Encouraged by the solemn ceremony and inspiring addresses, the class of 2020 will embrace the new-phase life of learning with continuing hard work.
