Opening Ceremony

From April 12 to 26, 2026, the International Workshop on Development and Application of Water Resources and Hydropower Standards for Developing Countries, sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology, China and led by Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI) in collaboration with International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP), National Research Institute for Rural Electrification (NRIRE), and Nanjing Automation Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydrology (NAIWH), was successfully held in Nanjing. Government officials, researchers, and university faculty from six countries - Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan - completed 15 days of study and exchange. GAO Changsheng, Vice President of NHRI, Huang Yan, Vice President of ICSHP, and GUAN Tiesheng, Director of NAIWH attended the opening ceremony.

Focusing on the development, application, and promotion of technical standards, experts from China National Institute of Standardization, China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, Aviation Industry Corporation of China, Ltd., Power Construction Corporation of China, China Water Resources Beifang Investigation, Design and Research Co., Ltd., and relevant divisions of Hydrology Bureau of Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), China were invited to deliver lectures at the training workshop. The curriculum covered topics including the International Organization for Standardization, international standard development, green development of small hydropower, standardization of hydrological monitoring, geotechnical engineering safety, flood control and disaster mitigation, reservoir dam safety management, and international engineering application of technical standards. The trainees also conducted field visits to ICSHP, IEC International Standards Promotion Center (Nanjing), Tiexinqiao Water Experiment Center, National Hydrological Metrology Station, Jiangdu Water Conservancy Hub, and China Grand Canal Museum. During the training, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on issues such as mutual recognition of standards, joint research, and capacity building, and submitted country reports.

At the closing ceremony, PAN Junning, Vice President of NHRI, XU Zhifeng, Director of NRIRE, and LIN Canyao, Party Committee Secretary of NAIWH presented certificates to the trainees.

Technical standards serve as a bridge for "soft connectivity" in international cooperation. NHRI will continue to leverage its research and platform advantages in the fields of water resources, transportation, and energy, deepen international exchanges on standardization, implement the Global Development Initiative, and work with developing countries toward "joint construction and sharing", to advance the achievement of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Aiming at the sharing of Chinese technologies and experience, this training workshop received strong support from Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology of MWR, China Center for International Science and Technology Exchange, Standard Innovation Department of State Administration for Market Regulation, Water Resources Department of Jiangsu Province, and Hohai University.
