On July 21, 2020, the Chinese National Committee for International Association of Hydrological Sciences (CNC-IAHS), Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI) and MWR Research Center for Climate Change co-organized an academic report meeting in Nanjing through a combination of on-site reports and online video conference. Professor XU Yueping from Zhejiang University and Professor LI Zhi from Northwest A&F University were invited to give academic reports titled Distributed Ensemble Flood Forecasting Based on Numerical Weather Forecast and Attribution, Suitability and Adjustment Potential of Vegetation Changes in the Loess Plateau, respectively. The meeting was chaired by Professor WANG Guoqing, chairman of CNC-IAHS Surface Water Committee and deputy chief engineer of MWR Research Center for Climate Change. Focusing on the key scientific issues about flood forecasting accuracy improvement and flood forecast period extension, Professor XU Yueping mainly introduced the methods and accuracy of flood forecasting, the key issues of fusion of numerical weather forecasting products, the research results about the multi-mode ensemble flood forecasting technology and uncertainty assessment, as well as case studies and applications in the watersheds of the Yarlung Zangbo River and the Lanjiang River. Professor LI Zhi systematically introduced his team's series of research results on the characteristics of vegetation changes in the Loess Plateau, identification of vegetation change causes, future vegetation scenario prediction and control measures, and put forward relevant countermeasures and suggestions of land use management strategies in the Loess Plateau in future climate change scenarios. Participants conducted detailed exchanges and discussions with Professors XU Yueping and LI Zhi on issues such as flood forecasting methods and their scope of application, the applicability of numerical weather forecast products, and the impact mechanism of environmental changes on watershed hydrology and vegetation. More than 200 researchers and graduate students from NHRI, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan University, Zhejiang University, Northwest A&F University, Southeast University, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology and other institutions participated in this academic report meeting. Combined with the current flood control and disaster mitigation situation and the high-quality development research of the Yellow River Basin, this meeting provided the participants with a stage for the exchanges of domestic surface hydrology research hotspots, and further enhanced the academic influence of CNC-IAHS Surface Water Committee.
