The 1st Technical Workshop and the 3rd Task Team Meeting of WMO-HydroSOS Successfully Held at NHRI

The 1st Technical Workshop and the 3rd Task Team Meeting of WMO-HydroSOS were successfully held in Nanjing during 11-14 November, 2019. The meeting was sponsored by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and co-hosted by Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI) and Research Center for Climate Change of Ministry of Water Resources (MWR-RCCC). 34 participants including regional and national hydrological advisers, international experts, stakeholders from the pilot river basins, and members of WMO Commission for Hydrology’s Advisory Working Group from 23 world organizations attend the workshop. Professor Sun Jinhua, vice president of NHRI, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the hosts. He wished the participants could know more about NHRI through the meeting, and expected more broad and in-depth exchanges and cooperation in the future between NHRI and all participants. The current achievements and existing issues were discussed at the meeting regarding to the progress of the 6 work packages of HydroSOS. Meanwhile, comparative analyses among global or regional hydrological simulation systems (i.e., WW-HyPE, TE-Global, GloFAS, etc.) were made to explore the possibilities of these products application in HydroSOS. The meeting followed the WMO conference style with hot points focused, highly efficient discussion, and active involvement of all participants. The milestones and deadlines of future activities of HydroSOS were discussed and agreed by all participants, which will positively push the process of HydroSOS from research and development to operation.

Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS), an important program launched by WMO, aims to develop a worldwide operational system to provide current global hydrological status and future possible hydrological outlooks. It is designated to help people understand current situation of global freshwater system, and also to provide the latest global or regional hydrological information for hydrometeorological service departments and other end users of WMO members and for the decision-making of managers. Professor Wang Guoqing is leading the Work Package 2a (WP2a) of HydroSOS. The research and innovation team of MWR-RCCC was responsible for the preparation and convention of the meeting. The success of this meeting enhanced and extended the international academic influence of NHRI and MWR-RCCC.
