Panorama of the PMB Project NHRI Staff on the Barren Island Coal Wharf Designed by NHRI Survey and Design Institute Sweep Survey by NHRI River and Harbor Engineering Department From August 17 to 22, 2018, an expert team headed by JIN Chuyang, Director of NHRI Survey and Design Institute (NHRI S&D), inspected the petrochemical project in Pulau Muara Besar (PMB), Brunei. The team discussed technical questions about the engineering construction with Public Works Department and Water Affairs Department of the Bruneian Ministry of Development. Located at the eastern part of the Muara Port, the project is being constructed by Hengyi Petrochemical, a Chinese company with an investment of approximately 3.4 billion US dollars. The project, as a major respond to the Belt and Road Initiative, covers land reclamation, special waterway and dock construction, seawater desalination of backup power plant, and crude oil processing plant with the annual capacity of 8 million tons. NHRI has given full play to its water-related expertise and talent, and undertaken some of the first-phase work including the design of coal wharf, sweep survey of the navigation channel and harbour basin, and the project management of land reclamation, navigation channel, dredging, docks, and offshore crude oil pipeline. After nearly five years of hard work, a modern factory has been set up on the past barren island.
