The 21st HUANG Wenxi Lecture, sponsored by Editorial Committee of Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering (CJGE) and organized by China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and State Key Laboratory of Simulation and Regulation of Water Cycle in River Basin, was successfully held in Beijing on April 22nd, 2018. About 700 representatives with 70 institutes and universities from Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Hong Kong and Taiwan, etc., attended the Lecture, including Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences CHEN Yunmin, professor of Zhejing University, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering ZHANG Jianmin, professor of Tsinghua University, and Director of Editorial Committee of CJGE CHEN Shengshui, Vice President of NHRI.
Mr. HUANG Wenxi, a famous expert in the fields of hydraulic structures and geotechnical engineering, was one of the founders of the discipline of soil mechanics and a pioneer of researches on water conservancy and hydropower in new China. To remember Mr. HUANG Wenxi′s outstanding contribution to the creation and development of rock and soil mechanics and engineering and to promote the scientific research spirit of “Diligence, Preciseness, Practicalism and Innovation” of the elder scientists including Mr. HUANG Wenxi, the Editorial Office of CJGE inaugurated HUANG Wenxi Lecture in 1998. For 21 years, the Lecture has made great contributions to promote the academic exchange among experts in the fields of rock and soil mechanics and engineering in various industries in China and the sustainable development of the discipline of geotechnical engineering. HUANG Wenxi Lecture has become an important academic brand in the fields of rock and soil mechanics and engineering.
The keynote speakers of HUANG Wenxi Lecture are voted by all the members of Editorial Committee of CJGE. The keynote speakers of the 21st HUANG Wenxi Lecture were LIU Songyu, professor of Southeast University, and WANG Xiaogang, professor of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research. Their lectures, titled Geotechnical Investigation and Remediation for Industrial Contaminate Sites and Discussion on Some Problems Observed in High Earth-Rockfill Dams, respectively, were comprehensive and foresighted, provoking enthusiastic responses from the participants and receiving high praise by peer experts. Meanwhile, Prof. CHEN Zhenghan, Prof. SHI Jianyong, Prof. ZHAO Jianming, Prof. XU Wenjie and Prof. ZHONG Qiming were invited to share their latest research achievements in fundamental theory, material properties, safety analysis and applied technology of relevant fields with respective emphasis.
