Field Investigation of the Safety Status of Hydropower Plants and Dams in Loas

At the invitation of Laos Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), a 5-person delegation headed by Prof. CHEN Shengshui, NHRI Vice President, visited Laos from 21th to 26th March, 2018. NHRI experts attended the Seminar on Hydropower Plant and Dam Safety, which was co-sponsored by the World Bank and the UN South-South Development Center, and gave the special presentations on China’s Dam Safety Monitoring Technology and Its Application, Assessment & Management of Dam Risks, as well as Safety and Technical Management for Hydropower Plants. H. E. Mr. Thongphath Inthavong, Vice Minister of MEM, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony. There were over 120 participants, including officials from MEM and Provincial Departments of Energy Management (DEM), and hydropower plant owners, attending the seminar.

Accompanied by Mr. Bouathep Malaykham, Deputy Director-General of DEM, MEM, NHRI delegation investigated the safety status of hydropower plants and dams in Laos, and paid a visit to Mr. Sychath Boutsakitirath, Director-General of DEM, MEM as well. After an in-depth exchange of the technical cooperation on hydropower plant and dam safety management, NHRI and DEM signed the Minutes of Meeting and agreed to conduct the capacity building and technical joint research under the framework of intergovernmental cooperation of the Lancang-Mekong River.
