The 37th World Congress of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) took place at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 14 August 2017. Ahmad Zahid, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, was present and made an opening speech. Prof. CHEN Qiuwen, Director of NHRI Center for Eco-Environmental Research, was honored with IAHR Arthur Thomas Ippen Award at the opening ceremony, and delivered the Arthur Thomas Ippen Lecture. The Ippen Award was established by IAHR Council in 1977 to memorialize Prof. Ippen, IAHR President from 1959 to 1963. The Award is presented biennially by IAHR to one of its members who has demonstrated outstanding ability, originality, and accomplishment in basic hydraulic research and/or applied hydraulic engineering, and who holds great promise for the continuation of a high level of productivity in his/her profession. Dr. CHEN Qiuwen is the first Chinese expert winning this Award.
Prof. CHEN Qiuwen, male, born on 13 January 1974, received his PhD from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Facing the frontier of international aquatic ecology research and the demand on aquatic ecosystem restoration in China, Dr. CHEN has established two new research areas, i.e. eco-hydraulics and hydro-informatics since his returning to China in 2004. Dr. CHEN has led the projects funded by National Science Foundation (NSFC) for Distinguished Youth, NSFC key support program, NSFC major international cooperation project, 973 project, 863 project, major projects of water pollution control and management, projects of national key research and development programs, etc., and made outstanding contributions to the simulation and regulation of ecological impacts of cascade hydropower development, early warning and control of algal bloom risk in lakes and reservoirs, and ecological restoration of river and lake ecosystems. Dr. CHEN once won the IWA Engineering Innovation Award for Applied Research in Far East Region and six awards at provincial or ministerial levels (three first prizes and three second prizes). He has published over 70 SCI research papers in international journals, and has been authorized 20 invention patents in the last five years, which have had great academic impacts and social benefits.
IAHR, formerly known as the International Association for Hydraulic Engineering and Research, was founded in 1935 and was re-named the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research in 2009. It is a worldwide independent member-based organization of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application, and dedicated to sustainable development of water conservancy, optimal management of the world's water resources and industrial water utilization.
