An appraisal meeting hosted by the Department of International Cooperation,
Science and Technology of MWR was held on March 13, 2014 to assess the findings
of the research project “Impact of Climate Change on China Water Security and
Countermeasures”jointly carried out by Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute,
China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, Water Resources
Information Center of MWR, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural
Resources Research of CAS, and National Climate Center, etc. The appraisal panel
consists of experts from MWR, General Institute of Water Resources and
Hydropower Planning, and Beijing Normal University, etc. Representatives of
Scientific Research Management Office of NHRI and relevant research experts also
attended the meeting.
The research team of the project “Impact of Climate Change on China Water
Security and Countermeasures”, one of the key public-interest research projects
of MWR, aiming at the potential impact of climate change on flood control
security, water resources security, eco-environment security, and water control
engineering security, has carried out studies on climate change scenarios, laws
of water resources evolution, impact assessment of climate change, adaptation
measures, etc., with a considerable amount of research findings.
The research findings have been adopted in the compilation of IPCC-AR5,
“National Adaptation Strategy for Climate Change”, “The 2nd National Climate
Change Assessment”, “Water Resources Development Planning in 12th Five-Year
Plan”, “National Drought Relief Plan”, “National Medium- and Long-Term Water
Supply and Demand Plan”, etc., with remarkable economic benefit, thus providing
strong scientific support to the Chinese government in international and
inter-government dialogues on climate change.
Experts of the panel agreed unanimously that the research findings had
reached the world-front level.
