Founded by academicians Yan Kai, Yang You, and Dou Guo-ren, China Ocean Engineering (COE), an English bimonthly (ISSN0890-5487, CN32–1441/P), started its publication in 1987. Under auspices of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), COE is sponsored by Chinese Society for Oceanography, and edited by Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute. The journal is one of the first twenty English-version journals in China opening up to the world since 1980s. The journal introduces the latest research achievements and academic trends and is concerned with all engineering aspects involved in the exploration and utilization of ocean resources, such as offshore engineering, dive and salvage, utilization of marine energy resources, protection of ocean environment and underwater technology. Topics covered regularly include design and construction of structures (including platforms, breakwaters, wharves, dikes and mooring systems), instrumentation and testing approaches (physical model and numerical model), new material development, structural/stress analysis, soil mechanics, sedimentation, and wave dynamics. It is currently published by Springer, the world's second largest journal publisher. COE is the first ocean-related journal in China to be indexed by SCI (1997), and Ei (1989), and has won financial support from China Association for Science and Technology and National Natural Science Foundation of China six times. As one of the source journals of China scientific papers designated by the Ministry of Science and Technology, COE is indexed by more than eighteen authoritative search databases at home and abroad, such as SCI-E, EI, AJ, CBST, CSA, and PA. According to the academic journal influencing factors in world’s ocean engineering announced by ISI-JCR for the years from 2001 to 2007, COE ranked the tenth (including the 7th in 2003 and 2007; and the 8th in 2005 and 2006).
