From June 19 to June 21, 2018, a delegation headed by ZHANG Jianyun, NHRI President, and composed of experts from Hydraulic Engineering Department, River and Harbor Engineering Department, Geotechnical Engineering Department, Materials and Structural Engineering Department, attended the 2018 World Transport Convention (WTC2018). President ZHANG delivered a keynote report titled Deep Channel of the Yangtze River Downstream Nanjing and Its Green Development Concepts and Technologies at the Forum of Green Shipping Development of the Yangtze River Economic Zone of the WTC2018. He expounded the strategic significance of the Yangtze River golden waterway construction, and introduced NHRI research on supporting the construction of the Zone. President ZHANG put forward suggestions and considerations on the promotion of ecological priority and green development of the Zone, overall coordination of water resource comprehensive utilization, protection of water ecological environment, and development of shoreline. Prof. HU Ya’an made a presentation titled Status and Prospects of High Dam Navigation Technology at the Award Ceremony for China Institute of Navigation (CIN) Science and Technology (S&T). Prof. LI Zhonghua gave a special report titled Innovative Research and Application of Hydraulic Ship lift at the Technical Communication of Key Research Platforms of Transportation Industry. These reports fully displayed NHRI major S&T innovations and research findings in the field of transportation, and received positive feedbacks from the participants.

The WTC2018 was jointly hosted by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Ministry of Transport (MoT) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). With the theme of Better Transport, Better World, the Convention consisted of keynote presentations, summit forum, academic meetings, S&T exhibition, and special events. HUAI Jinpeng, CAST Party Secretary, LI Xiaopeng, Minister of Transport, and HE Huawu, CAE Vice President and CAST Vice President, attended the Convention and delivered speeches. NHRI participated in the Convention in an all-round way and won several awards. Among them, Static, Dynamic and Non-destructive Diagnosis and Performance Improvement Technology of Wharf Structural Diseases, presided over by Prof. HU Shaowei, won the CIN S&T Special Award. Key Technology Research on Systematic Improvement of the Three Deep Channels of Fujiangsha, Tongzhousha, and Baimaosha in the Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River, presided over by Prof. XIA Yunfeng, was awarded the First Prize of the CIN S&T Award. Research and Application of Siltation Monitoring and Early Warning and Forecasting System for the Immersed Tube Tunnel Foundation Bed of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and Research on Characteristics and Engineering Application of Water and Sediment Transport in the Channel within the Tidal Current Limit, with NHRI as a major accomplishment unit, won the First Prize and Second Prize of the CIN S&T Award respectively. Prof. GUAN Yunfei won the CIN S&T Youth Award. During the WTC2018, NHRI set up an independent exhibition stand in the area of key scientific research platforms of the transportation industry, and NHRI scientific research advantages, innovation platforms, and S&T achievements were comprehensively introduced, receiving widespread attention.

Through this Convention, NHRI fully demonstrated its latest research findings, promoted the interaction with industry experts and scholars, and further enhanced its influence in the transportation filed.

1. Static, Dynamic and Non-destructive Diagnosis and Performance Improvement Technology of Wharf Structural Diseases, presided over by Prof. HU Shaowei, won the 2017 CIN S&T Special Award.

Aiming at the engineering needs for the diagnosis and repair of wharf structural diseases, this project has thoroughly studied the static and dynamic characteristics, non-destructive disease diagnosis, overall classification of health conditions and quantitative evaluation methods of wharf structure under working condition, by using comprehensive geophysical prospecting technology for non-destructive static testing and overall non-destructive dynamic testing, and diagnostic techniques combining local and holistic approaches. The project has put forward a series of reasonable, economical and practical techniques on structural performance improvement. The research findings have been widely used in more than 100 wharves in over 20 large and medium-sized port areas such as Tianjin Port, Dalian Port, Zhoushan Port, Zhangjiagang Port, and Guanyun Port, generating significant economic and social benefits.

The project has revealed the spatial-temporal distribution characteristics and movement mechanism of water and sediment in the three deep channels under new conditions, evolution rule of tidal bifurcated waterway and riverbed, and shoal navigation-obstructing mechanism, established a prediction formula for tidal level and tidal current under the joint action of runoff and tide, and put forward a comprehensive utilization mode of maintaining an ultra-high water level in the three deep channels, and a calculation formula of ship pass capacity improvement. Based on the study of the relevance and node control and guidance effect of the bottom land in branching channels, the research has introduced the key technology of river regime control and guidance to long river channel regulation for the first time, set the improvement principles of the three deep channels, proposed for the first time a calculation mode of channel improvement parameters under the joint action of runoff and tide, and formulated the layout plan of the improvement project for the three deep channels. The project has also revealed the energy dissipation and shoal protection mechanism of a new-type permeable frame, forwarded the calculation formula of the maximum depth and location of local scour pit in the channel improvement structure with river bottom protected, for the first time systematically studied the implementation timing and coordination key techniques for the multipurpose comprehensive regulation project of the three deep channels, and established a long-term dynamic tracking research platform. The research findings have been applied to the -12.5m deep channel improvement project of the Yangtze River downstream Nanjing, improving the design efficiency and quality, ensuring the smooth implementation of the improvement project, and generating huge economic benefits.

3. Prof. GUAN Yunfei won the CIN S&T Youth Award

The CIN S&T Youth Award was established in 2014. The award is issued once every two years to at most 10 young S&T workers who are under the age of forty and have made outstanding contributions to discipline and industry development and S&T improvement. Prof. GUAN Yunfei has long been engaged in scientific research on the new structure development of waterway engineering, soft soil foundation treatment, marine geotechnical engineering and other fields. In the past five years, he has undertaken more than 20 national and provincial-level scientific and technological research projects and achieved technical breakthrough and research finding application in domestic and overseas engineering projects including the 300,000-ton channel project of Lianyungang Port, breakwater project of Xuweigang Port, deep-water sheet pile wharf project of Tangshan Port, and expansion project of the Maldives International Airport. Prof. GUAN won 1 Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and 5 prizes at provincial or ministerial level. He has participated in composing many national and industry standards. Prof. GUAN was selected as one of the leaders of the young and middle-aged S&T talents of Jiangsu Province 333 Project, and received an honorary title of MoT Young S&T Talent.
