Visit to NHRI History Exhibition Hall
On June 13, 2018, Bruce Melville, professor of the University of Auckland (UA) and Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Asaad Shamseldin, UA Associate Professor, and two other UA faculties, and Yee-Meng Chiew, professor of Nanyang Technological University of Singapore attended the Workshop on River Health, Water and Environment held at NHRI and chaired by NHRI Vice President LI Yun. The Workshop saw the attendance of relevant NHRI staff from the President’s Office, Hydraulic Engineering Department, River and Harbor Engineering Department, etc.
The UA experts made academic reports titled Scour at Hydraulic Structures, River Health in Asia-Pacific Region, Water Quality of Impacted Waterbodies in New Zealand and India and Technologies for Restoring These, and Progress in Tsunami-Related Research, respectively. Prof. Chiew made a report titled Propeller Induced Flow Field and Bed Erosion. NHRI Dr. XIE Chen, Dr. DAI Jiangyu, and Dr. LIAO Yipeng also made relevant reports.
Prof. Melville introduced the scour at skewed complex bridge piers, effects of submerged weir and bridge on local scour at bridge piers, tsunami-induced scour mechanism and the impact of floating debris carried by tsunami on coastal infrastructure structures. A/Prof. Shamseldin presented the assessment system for river health and the current river problems in the Asia and Pacific regions. Other expert reports covered water pollution in New Zealand and India and river system restoration technologies such as bionic wetlands and floating river banks. Prof. Chiew introduced the flow field and bed erosion induced by underwater propeller jet flow, the influence of toe clearance on the development of scour hole around an open quay, and a new propeller jet flow experimental methodology: oblique PIV measurement, etc.
At the Workshop, Vice President LI, directors of Hydraulic Engineering Department and International Cooperation Office and the visiting experts discussed the joint application for international cooperation research projects, exchange and training of graduate students, sharing of academic findings, and holding periodic or aperiodic academic meetings. The Workshop enriched the knowledge reserves of NHRI researchers and provided more scientific ideas for participants.
After the Workshop, Vice President LI accompanied Prof. Melville et al. for a visit to NHRI History Exhibition Hall.
