On Apr. 27, 2017, MWR Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology (DICST) organized an acceptance meeting to assess the MWR public-good research project “Research on Complete Set of Technology for Ecological Control of Middle and Small Rivers and Their Slopes in Western China” in Beijing. The expert panel consisted of experts with MWR, China Irrigation and Drainage Development Center, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute, Yellow River Institute of Hydraulic Research, China Agricultural University, etc. Deputy Director JIN Xuhao with DICST and the project team members attended the meeting. Based on the investigation of domestic and foreign middle and small river harnessing projects, river ecological revetment and plant restoration revetment projects, the deterioration rules and disaster process of soil and water erosion and river banks within a catchment are studied, and the ecology protection technology of bank soils such as salinized soil, frozen soil and gravelly soil, etc. in the western region is developed by the project with the help of theoretical research, numerical simulation, indoor experiments, physical modelling and pilot projects, taking the typical middle and small rivers in West China as research objects. The study reveals the bank collapse, deterioration and failure mechanisms of the middle and small rivers in the western region, puts forward the computation analysis method of bank progressive failure, starting of landslide debris flow and disaster process in middle and small river catchments, and the comprehensive prevention and control technology of debris flows in the middle and small river basins in the western region is constructed. The soil fixation mechanism, theory and computation method of bank slope vegetation roots are disclosed, and the new technology of ecological revetment is developed for the bank slopes in the middle and small river catchments. The design, construction quality acceptance and assessment standards of ecology revetment technology are raised, and a complete set of ecology protection technology suitable for the middle and small rivers in the western region is formed. The research findings have been successfully applied in the river harnessing engineering in Xinjiang, Jiangsu and Heilongjiang with remarkable social and economic benefits obtained and broad popularization and application value. The expert panel unanimously agreed that the research tasks had been comprehensively fulfilled with abundant research findings, remarkable economic benefits, outstanding progress and expected goals after carefully listening to the results report. The project smoothly passed the acceptance check with an excellent score.
