On Mar. 21, 2017, NHRI team led by Prof. MA Fuheng won the bidding of the Red Flag Irrigation Canal (RFIC) Safety Assessment after the evaluation by Bid Evaluation Committee and recording at relevant supervision department. The main tasks of the project include the safety status survey of structures in the irrigation zone of RFIC, quality inspection and supplementary geological survey of key canal system structures, safety check of structures in general canal, trunks and important branches, comprehensive assessment of canal safety, and suggestions on reinforcement and operational management improvement of the Canal. RFIC was built in 1960s with a general canal of 70.6 km long. The main structures include the water diversion project at the head of the Canal, Youth Cave, Hero Canal, Hollow Dam, Nangu Cave Aqueduct, and diversion sluices at watershed, and most of them were built along the terrain contour with complex terrain and geological conditions. The construction of RFIC produced a large number of heroes, and gave birth to the great spirit of RFIC. RFIC became a monument of Chinese national spirit and a symbol of Chinese culture. However, after 50 years’ operation, the Canal aging results in frequent accidents, increasing operational risks, affecting normal water supply and seriously affecting the people's life and social and economic development in Linzhou City. The project findings will provide scientific basis for the rehabilitation design of the Canal, and serve as a pilot for the safety assessment of large-scaled complex irrigation zones.
